The Family Program at Schafer Hall

Safe, stable, family-friendly housing.

The Family Program at Schafer Hall provides safe and stable housing, on-site family-centered case management, and compassionate support services to 30 single-parent families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Located in East Harlem, Schafer Hall is an ADA-compliant facility constructed in 2001.

Who is eligible?

Families are referred to Schafer Hall through New York City’s HIV/AIDS Service Administration (HASA). To qualify, a household must have at least one member with an HIV diagnosis and must have at least one dependent.

Schafer Hall residents have access to:

Family-Based Supportive Case Management. Case managers meet with residents to develop service plans focused on supporting the family and stabilizing the household.

Independent Living Skills. Families participate in workshops covering topics such as understanding the landlord/tenant relationship, negotiating the municipal educational system, health and nutrition basics, coping with family-related stress, and discovering community resources.

Youth Programming. To help foster family stability, recreational activities for the entire family are scheduled year-round. The staff also conducts youth-oriented activities after school and during the summer months. Through activities such as video production, photography, and art, the program offers young people a positive, creative outlet for the frustrations of modern urban life.
